When New Order released Blue Monday in 1983, they didn’t just release a single — they rewrote the rules of electronic pop. Born from the ashes of Joy Division, the band fused post-punk attitude with machine precision, creating a track that would become the best-selling 12″ single of all time. This multitrack reconstruction of Chase offers a closer look at the production methods of Giorgio Moroder, whose work on the track helped shape the early sound of electronic dance music. Released in 1978 as part of his Academy Award-winning soundtrack for Midnight Express, Chase showcases the hypnotic, driving energy of Moroder’s productions, highlighted by his signature use of digital delay on the bass. Aside from the drums, all the sounds were created using The Legend HZ—a six-oscillator analog-modeled software synthesizer plugin developed by Synapse Audio in collaboration with renowned film composer Hans Zimmer. This reconstruction offers an exploration of the intricate layering and rhythmic precision that made Chase a defining track in the evolution of electronic music.

All the sounds in this multitrack were recreated using UVI instruments, with particular attention to capturing the character of the original production. The bassline, plucked synths, and airy pads have been carefully reconstructed to reflect the textures and tones that defined What Is Love as a landmark in 90s electronic music.
